Less than four months after the Texas Department of Transportation imploded two sections of the old northbound I-35 to northbound 183 flyover, a newly reconstructed flyover is slated for opening this weekend. However, with a few finishing touches still remaining, TxDOT will temporarily close the northbound lanes of I-35 at 183 overnight to complete re-striping.
Beginning Friday, September 10 at 11 p.m., the northbound I-35 mainlanes will be closed to traffic, weather permitting. Traffic will detour to the frontage road at the US 183 South exit (#239), travel through the signalized intersections at St. Johns Avenue and US 183 and reenter the mainlanes near Rundberg Lane. All lanes and the new flyover will open by 8 a.m. on Saturday.
The new bypass lane will allow traffic on the northbound frontage road to bypass the signal at St. Johns Avenue, and either enter I-35 or stay on the frontage road to the US 183 intersection. These improvements will increase safety, mobility and traffic flow for all users, TxDOT says.
The work is part of the $124.2 million Texas Clear Lanes project which began construction in 2018 and is anticipated to be complete in early 2022.
