Beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 14, the Texas Department of Transportation will open the second lane of the new roundabout at the southbound I-35 frontage road and 51st Street intersection. Police officers will be on site to help direct traffic as drivers become familiar with the new configuration. This will allow drivers to use both lanes of the roundabout, improving mobility and enhancing safety.
Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the new traffic pattern, and motorists should allow extra time to travel through this area. TxDOT asks that drivers be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.
TxDOT would like to remind drivers of the following safety information for traveling through a roundabout:
- Yield to drivers in the roundabout
- Choose appropriate lane before entering roundabout
- Minimize lane changes within the roundabout
- Do not stop in the roundabout
- Avoid driving next to oversize vehicles
The $16.5 million project is funded by Texas Clear Lanes and the city of Austin. The contractor is Capital Excavation Company. Full project completion is expected later this month, weather permitting.
