Overcoming racism at the University of Texas at Austin is the goal of a plan being developed by Interim President Jay Hartzell.
Hartzell’s scheduling meetings with Student Groups to address current problems with diversity and equity. Malcom McGregor is the President of UT’s Black Student Alliance, they’ve reached out to President Hartzell, an much like the Student Athletes they too want to see Confederate monuments removed, buildings named after segregationists renamed and the Eyes of Texas discontinued, “because The Eyes of Texas was a song in minstrel shows, where they had performers in black face, basically a portrayal of a caricature of the black individual.” He explained that’s why alot of black students feel uncomfortable with the song.
McGregor said they’re hoping that President Hartzell will do more than just listen and act.
I am scheduling conversations with students, leaders of black student orgs, community members & student athletes.
Together, we will create a plan to ensure black students are fully supported and to make meaningful changes to promote diversity and equity: https://t.co/pPdfyubcV6
