The University of Texas Police Chief writes an open letter to Austin Mayor Steve Adler and the City Council about homelessness around the 40 Acres.
Chief David Carter’s letter to Adler and Council acknowledges the need for housing and support for the homeless as he asks for restrictions on camping around the entire perimeter of the UT Campus. Carter said his officers frequently respond to predatory and harassing behavior along the ‘Drag’ and other surrounding areas. He said students, faculty and even other homeless people feel threatened and unsafe. Carter also wants camping restricted in West Campus. The Chief said UT is actively partnering with the City to assist the homeless including addressing mental health, substance abuse and other root causes.
Please see my letter to @MayorAdler & council on behalf of @UTAustin asking that they work to improve public safety by prohibiting camping by members of the public along the entire perimeter of campus, as well as west of campus where many students live, work and gather. pic.twitter.com/PAkrZWCEbZ
