On Saturday, a fire erupted near Liberty Hill that continues to burn as of Monday. Throughout the weekend, crews from multiple agencies battled the blaze, which eventually spread to more than 500 acres. At last report, the San Gabriel Fire was 75 percent contained.
“It’s really just a tinderbox out there,” said County Judge Bill Gravell. “I saw something I’ve never seen in my life in Central Texas. This was just cedar trees and some oaks, but I saw flames 75 to 100 feet in the air.”
There have been no reports of injuries, death, or significant structural damage to homes or businesses. The cause remains under investigation but Gravell said he does have a theory.
“I think somebody was outside with a grinder,” said Gravell. “Sparks flared off and it just got out of control.”
Williamson County officials will be providing an update at a press conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Monday, July 25.
