The Workers Defense Project is angry that a woman accused of assaulting an Austin police officer is being held in jail on an ICE detainer. They say Tania Silva should be released to a hospital and treated for mental health issues. APD’s Destiny Winston reports Silva told cops she wanted to hurt herself.
And thought the officers reassured her they were there to help, Silva kicked and scratched one of them. They arrested her after that, protestors call the interaction a betrayal.
At a protest, the workers defense project’s Candelario Vasqez said Silva needed help, not a jail cell. Those at the protest were further incensed that Silva was put on an ICE detainer after her arrest.
