For this first time in the Lake Travis area, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Lakeway will be hosting the RED (Reality Education for Drivers) program at their facility located at 100 Medical Parkway. RED is a traffic program for teens and young adults (age 25 and under) designed to help them become safer drivers. It is taught at select Baylor Scott and White hospitals throughout Texas.
The RED program focuses on driving safe (no texting and driving), driving sober (no drinking and driving) and driving secure (always buckle up). This one day class is taught by hospital staff and runs approximately four hours in length. The program also includes a tour of the trauma unit of the hospital. Classes will be held three times this year: Saturday, February 8; Monday, June 15; and Saturday, August 22. The program is free and open to the public, but early registration is required.
Lakeway Municipal Court will be referring qualified teen defendants from court to attend these classes as a condition of their probation. Defendants completing the RED program, as well as other conditions of probation, will have their traffic cases dismissed and these offenses will not appear on their driving record.
Lakeway Municipal Court officials say the goal is to make teens safer drivers by helping them become more aware of the serious risks and dangers of driving. Young drivers are at the highest risk due to their lack of experience and basic driving skills.
