REPORT: Texas Interviews Royal Ivey Over the Weekend

It has been reported multiple times now, that the University of Texas has interviewed it’s first candidate to fill the open head coaching vacancy.

There has been a lot of speculation as to who UT will look to hire, Royal Ivey’s name came out immediately as one of the top candidates.

Ivey is a former Longhorn who played under Rick Barnes from 2000-2004, obviously part of the Final Four run in 2013. He averaged almost 8 points a game and started 126 games in his college career.

Ivey spent 11 seasons in the NBA with multiple stops, including ATL and OKC, before retiring and turning to the coaching side of the game. Currently he is on the coaching staff with the Brooklyn Nets under Head Coach Steve Nash, as well as former teammate at UT and OKC, Kevin Durant, currently plays for the Nets.

At 39 years old and no head coaching experience, it would be a risky hire… but maybe that is what this program needs?  Time will tell!
