Bill that kills M&O tax hits the Texas senate

State lawmakers spar over eliminating the largest portion of your property tax bill.

House lawmakers have voted in support of HB 297, which if eventually is given its signature by Governor Abbott, would completely eliminate the maintenance and operation portion of your school property taxes by January of 2022.

But some say that revenue will have to be recouped somehow, and again the possibility of a significant hike in sales tax has been discussed, although that idea has been taken off the table for this legislative session.

The thinking here is also that the elimination of the M&O portion of your taxes would go a long way in fixing the problem of recapture, which has the Austin school district sending $670-million of your taxes to the state this year.

HB 297 heads to the Senate today.
