- The Austin Independent School District’s board unanimously approved a new sex-education curriculum which has been viewed controversial
- The curriculum will span grades three through eight
- Students for the first time will be taught about sexual orientation and gender identity
- Students will also learn how to identify adults they can trust, options on what to do if they get pregnant, and seventh graders would learn how to use a condom
- Opponents to the curriculum are worried students will be exposed to subject matter that is not age-appropriate and may learn about sexual acts they are not yet aware of
- According to AISD leaders, parents will have the option to opt out
- An exact date has not be announce for when the curriculum will be taught but it is proposed it could begin as early as May 2020
