Austin City Council to Change Invocation before Meetings

Austin City Council

  • Mayor Steve Adler has requested the city clerk to include opportunities for short poems, meditation, moments of silence, etc., not just prayer before council meetings
  • The change will also allow participants to sit rather than stand
  • Mayor Adler says he does not want it to seem members of council are endorsing a single religion or religion itself by conducting just a prayer
  • Adler will introduce each speaker to explain the goal of the ritual at the beginning of each meeting
  • During that time, he says they will, “start our meetings with a peaceful moment by inviting different people from walks of life and different faiths to share their prayers or moments of reflection,”
  • Adler also said the goal is to “begin our meetings with everyone focused and aligned for the greater good.”
  • They will not however, allow that time for music or comments about city business
