Former City Council Member Ellen Troxclair discusses the Human Rights Commission’s proposal for a ban on cashless businesses on the Todd & Don show
- The Human Rights Commission has recommended at Austin City Council’s first meeting to ban stores or restaurants from not accepting cash
- The commission cited a federal report that says 17{15c2ce8669a1ed2f74ebf6ef168f05679f17d95790f1cbb6a225857870a08390} of African-American households and 14{15c2ce8669a1ed2f74ebf6ef168f05679f17d95790f1cbb6a225857870a08390} of Hispanic households don’t have bank accounts
- Reasons for not having an account include high bank fees and not having an ID
- Larger cities, like New York City and Philadelphia, have passed similar policies
- Commissioner Courtney Santana spoke with KVUE and said the aim of the recommendation is to give cashless businesses a reason to accept cash, not punish them
- According to the resolution, businesses with fewer than five employees would not be impacted
- The city council is expected to take the issue up in March or April
