- Mayor Steve Adler suggested every residential lot in Austin should allow for three units of housing during the Austin City Council meeting on Monday
- As of right now, most single-family lots in Austin allow for two units but Alder said by designating all single-family lots with a zoning specification of “R3”, it would allow for three units everywhere
- Council Member Kathie Tovo called this move “invisible density” which would have an older house at the front of a lot and two new housing units behind it
- Some council members like Delia Garza were vocal about the idea being proposed so late after the City Council’s original plan proposal which was approved in May
- The city’s long-term transportation plan called for housing density closer to heavily used roads to reduce to encourage more drivers to use public transportation and would reduce the amount of people who drive alone to and from work
- The city council is set to review the land development code and take its first of three votes on December 9 with final approval set for February
