- Meals on Wheels Central Texas has opened their first-ever LGBTQ senior center
- The center had a grand opening on Monday but has been in operation since a soft opening in September
- Although housed at Metropolitan Community Church in south Austin, the program is not affiliated with the church or any religious messaging
- Officials say the center is necessary as older members of the LGBTQ community have concerns about being discriminated against at other social spaces
- Three out of four adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender “are concerned about having enough support from family and friends as they age,” according to a survey released last year from AARP
- The concern of not being accepted can lead to isolation amongst older members of the LGBTQ community
- The Golden Generation, as the group of seniors refer to themselves, meets twice a week to play games and socialize
- Meals on Wheels provides lunch for their meetups
