- A Lakeway couple is receiving backlash for a gender reveal moment they filmed at the Capital of Texas Zoo in Cedar Creek
- In a short video, Jonathan and Bridgette Joseph toss a watermelon filled with blue Jell-O into the mouth of a 5-year-old Nile hippo named Tank to reveal what the gender of their second child would be
- The couple has since gone viral with critics slamming the couple for using the hippo in their gender reveal
- The Josephs explained they had permission and help from the zoo for the reveal and they had been trying for a boy for many years after having a daughter
- Zoo director Michael Hicks told the New York Post he routinely gives Tank watermelons filled with Jell-O as a treat. He also stated, “This is the same Jell-O people feed their kids. It’s totally harmless.”
- Hicks also added, “You can’t make a hippo do anything. He weighs 4,000 pounds. He enjoyed it as much as anybody else did.”
