Smoking in public housing properties across America is banned starting today. But that ban has been in place in Austin for a while. Housing Authority of the City of Austin President Mike Gerber says their ban went into place a year and a half ago. It hasn’t been easy, but Gerber said they’ve seen fantastic results, many of those residents who gave up smoking continued on to other life-improving programs while setting a good example for children.
Gerber also said that while smoking is allowed outside in designated areas only, he hopes one day to have all properties occupied by non-smokers.
